The first application with a 3D model filed with the EAPO

On November 3, 2022, the applicants from the Republic of Tatarstan (the Russian Federation) submitted an application for the issuance of a Eurasian industrial design patent with a 3D model of the claimed object to the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO). Just two days after the start of accepting 3D applications, a set of documents was sent to the EAPO.

Owing to the quick filing of the application with 3D, the Patent Office has taken some additional crash tests of the digital systems and registries to check their readiness to receive and process this type of applications. The tests showed the absolute ability of the EAPO to work with the three-dimensional models.

“Such a prompt filing an application with 3D evidences the growing demand for Eurasian patents, which make it possible to visualize the essence of the claimed solution more clearly owing to 3D. It is of high importance, especially for industrial designs, where the appearance features can give a technological or competitive advantage” , said Grigory Ivliev, the President of the EAPO. “It is noteworthy that the first 3D application was received by the Patent Office from a resident of the Russian Federation, a member state of the Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO). It means that the applicants in the Eurasian space were waiting for the introduction of such a tool, which gave them a convenient opportunity to further explain the to-be-patented developments through a three-dimensional presentation of the claimed object.

On November 1, 2022, the EAPO announced the possibility of accepting Eurasian applications for a patent for an invention or industrial design with 3D models attached. The start of accepting applications with 3D models will not only enable applicants to visualize the proposed innovations more clearly, but also improve the efficiency of the examination of the Eurasian applications.
